The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) may cancel its plan to start this season’s Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) next month. Instead, they are thinking of postponing it until September because of the current extreme weather.

The four-day league was originally planned to begin in May but was pushed to June 15 because of a few series involving the Bangladesh ‘A’ team and the Emerging Team. Now, due to the weather, it might be delayed further.

Since there is a heat warning and a high chance of rain and storms next month, the BCB is now thinking about holding the BCL at the beginning of the next domestic season in September.

“The series was first planned for May, but it didn’t happen because some foreign teams came to play series in Bangladesh. So, we had to delay it,” said BCB tournament committee chairman Akram Khan to The Daily Star. “After that, we planned to begin the league on June 15.”

“But since there’s a warning about a heat wave, we are now planning to hold the league at the beginning of the next season,” he said. He added that even if the matches happen next season, the league will still be counted as part of the current 2024–25 season.

At the same time, the BCB is having trouble finding sponsors for all four teams in the BCL, which is the country’s only franchise-based four-day cricket tournament.

In recent years, two teams — East Zone and Central Zone — were supported by Islami Bank and Walton. The other two teams were managed directly by the BCB.
