Silva, in his parting statement, said it had been a privilege to lead the ACC and credited the member boards for strengthening the council’s presence in the region. He wished Naqvi well and expressed confidence in his leadership.
Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s interior minister, now adds another key responsibility to his portfolio. As PCB chairman, he has already been active in high-level negotiations, especially concerning the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be hosted in Pakistan. With India’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan, a hybrid hosting model was agreed uponIndia’s matches in neutral venues when Pakistan hosts, and vice versa.
One of Naqvi’s immediate challenges as ACC president will be deciding the venue for the upcoming T20 Asia Cup. Though India is listed as the official host, Pakistan is expected to demand a neutral venue for their matches due to ongoing political tensions.
There’s already a precedent: during the 2023 Asia Cup, under Jay Shah’s presidency, a hybrid model was used Pakistan hosted early games, and Sri Lanka hosted the remaining matches, including those involving India.
With his dual roles in both PCB and now ACC, Naqvi is positioned at the heart of cricket diplomacy in Asia. His leadership will be crucial in navigating the complex political landscape of the region while aiming to unite the Asian cricketing community for future growth
