Glenn Maxwell has been handed a fine amounting to 25% percent of his match fee and a demerit point by IPL officials for violating the code of conduct. The Punjab Kings all-rounder committed the offense during Tuesday’s match against Chennai Super Kings at the Maharaja Jadvendra Singh International Stadium in Chandigarh.
It was a high-scoring thriller, with Punjab Kings posting a formidable 219/6 in 20 overs, powered by a blazing 103 off 42 balls from young opener Priyansh Arya. Despite a valiant effort, Chennai Super Kings could only manage 201/5 in response, handing Punjab an 18-run victory. However, the match also saw Maxwell penalized for breaching conduct guidelines during this crucial encounter.
In an official press release, the IPL stated, “Glenn Maxwell has admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct (hitting an object or structure during a match) and has accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee. For Level 1 offences, the match referee’s decision is final and binding.”
Article 2.2 covers actions outside the normal course of play such as kicking stumps or causing intentional or careless damage to property like advertising boards, dressing room doors, windows, or mirrors. Acts of frustration, like smashing an ad board with a bat, fall under this violation.
Punjab Kings bounced back with a crucial win over Chennai Super Kings, who had earlier lost to Rajasthan Royals. Meanwhile, CSK slipped to their fourth straight defeat. According to Indian media, Maxwell dismissed for just 1 run off 2 balls by Ravichandran Ashwin reacted angrily upon returning to the dressing room. However, specific details of the incident remain unclear.
