Mehedi Hasan Miraz became the new captain of the Bangladesh team in the ODI format in July. Bangladesh is going to take the field for the first time under his leadership today (Wednesday). They will face Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The match will start at 3 pm Bangladesh time.

Bangladesh’s ODI journey is starting under a completely new leadership without the much-discussed Panchapandavas of Tiger Cricket. As such, Miraj, the captain of the format, believes that this is a great opportunity for the youngsters. The Tiger captain said this at a press conference the day before the start of the series in Colombo.

Miraj said, “We will undoubtedly miss the seniors. They have played for the country for a long time. But since they have retired, we have to accept that too. But for those who have come into the team now, it is a good opportunity. If they do well, they can be permanent in the future. I think we will do well as a team.”

Regarding who will get a chance to replace Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah, Miraj said, “We are planning who can adapt to their place. Such a change will not happen in one or two series. We have to give it time. It is a bit difficult for the team to have so many senior players leaving at once. But we are trying to bring improvement in those places.”

Miraj also said, “I have said before, when we came from the Champions Trophy, we did not play ODIs and two important positions were vacant. They retired and there were many important players for the team. We will try to fill those positions with experienced players. As the captain, I think I can bat in one of the two positions myself. I may play Liton Das in the other position. Because from there, the game has to be made (to move towards a big score).”

Bangladesh wants to build a team now, ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Miraj said, “There is a lot of time for the World Cup. Some new players have come who can make their place. We are planning how to prepare the team within this time.”
