Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined 30% of his match fee for showing disagreement with the umpire’s decision during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match between Dindigul Dragons and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, played on June 8 in Coimbatore.
As per TNPL officials, Ashwin was fined 10% for showing dissent and an additional 20% for misusing equipment after his dismissal. A post-match hearing was held with the match referee, and the Dindigul Dragons captain accepted the penalty without any objections.
A TNPL official told Cricbuzz, “The match referee held a hearing after the game. Ashwin was fined 10% of his match fee for showing disagreement with the umpires and another 20% for misusing equipment. He agreed to the punishment.”
IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans win the match easily by nine wickets.
The incident happened in the fifth over of Dindigul’s innings. Ashwin, who opened the batting for the Dragons, tried to play a sweep shot against Tiruppur captain R Sai Kishore. The ball struck his pads, and umpire Kritika gave him out lbw. But 38-year-old Ashwin was not pleased with the decision, as he believed the ball had landed outside the leg stump line.
The Dragons’ captain was unlucky as no reviews were left — both had already been used earlier for wide-ball decisions. After getting out, Ashwin showed his frustration by arguing with the umpire. On his way back to the dressing room, he angrily hit his pads with the bat and later threw his gloves.
Ashwin had scored 18 runs before getting out, which started a collapse in the Dindigul Dragons’ batting. The team was all out for just 93 runs, losing their last nine wickets for only 54 runs. Tiruppur bowlers Esakkimuthu A (4 wickets), M Mathivannan (3 wickets), and R Sai Kishore (2 wickets) took wickets regularly to help bowl out the Dragons.
In response, Tiruppur Tamizhans easily reached the target, winning the match in just 11.5 overs with nine wickets left. Tushar Raheja played a brilliant innings, scoring 65 runs from 39 balls without getting out, and helped his team get their first win of the season.
